Chapter Sixteen

“Stop kneeing the back of my seat, Gavin!” John snapped from the driver’s side in the rental. I sent a sympathetic glance back to Gavin. He was so tall and really was all limbs, so any car, he had difficulties with the leg room. It didn’t help that this car was a small Prius. Hayden scowled on beside him in the back. After we got off the airplane, they began fighting about who would sit next to me in the back. So I did the only thing that made sense.

I sat next to John in the front seat. John simply laughed and told the guys that’s what they get. They have been grumbling the entire ride. It wasn’t a short ride either. Only John knows where this couple lived besides a small few in the entire world. They had to stay hidden so they weren’t tracked down and killed before they could finish their work on that blocking device. And they didn’t want the wrong people to get their hands on it.

“How much longer? I’m not even sure I’ll be able to get out of this car with my legs intact.” Gavin whined from his scrunched-up position. Hayden wasn’t fairing too much better. Only having a couple of extra inches. My back could still feel his knees, but I didn’t want to complain. Part of me felt bad since I was much shorter than either of them so one of them should’ve sat in front, but I was not about to deal with the scowling or gloating that would ensue if I did pick one of them to sit next with. I would’ve picked Hayden, just because being next to him calmed my soul in an unexplainable way, but I also felt like I would need to choose Gavin since he’d been my best friend for years.

Wasn’t there an option C?

Sighing, I turned the radio on and tried to find a station that wasn’t country, but it was hard since we were out in the sticks. Wherever we were going, it was definitely remote and hard to find. Suddenly, John grabbed some cloth before tossing one at Gavin. Gavin gave him a confused look, holding up the black bandana.

“Cover your eyes for the last half hour of this trip. You’re a normal human, and they don’t fully trust them since you guys can be jumped by anyone. Once we’re there, you can take it off.” Gavin looked like he was going to argue but finally rolled his eyes, cursing under his breath.

“Is that really necessary?” I asked John, pursing my lips. Gavin tied the rag around his eyes with an annoyed huff.

“Unfortunately, yes. I had to fight hard just to get them to agree to let Gavin come along. It’s a high risk their taking a human to their home. Anyone can jump him if they’re skilled enough. Then they would know where Brenda and Michael are located. It may seem paranoid, but it’s necessary. They were wondering why
